The WhisperersThe Whisperers   
 No one knows their true origin, or even when they first appeared. They’d been around so long that to even the elderly, it seemed as if the beasts had roamed their lands since the beginning of time. Some say that they were the mutated forms of humans that had been exposed to radioactive materials which altered their appearance and state of mind, but they were so monstrous that this idea was usually thrown out. All anyone ever knew about them was that they came with the fog.

 Clariss walked along the sidewalk with her head down. The sunglasses were sliding off the bridge of her nose as she stared at her platform shoes. Glancing ahead, she looked to see how far from school she was, pushing her sunglasses back into place with her gloved finger. It was Monday, and against her parent’s request to stay home she’d decided to attend school. It wasn’t that she enjoyed it all that much except for her friends, but after being cooped up in her room all weekend after the little screaming episode, it felt good to be anywhere except home.

The NightHeart on the edge of exploding, blood roaring in my eardrums, and ragged, labored breathing were the only things that seemed to echo in the nighttime air, except for the slapping of my shoes on the wet concrete. My throat was burning, all the way down to where it reached my lungs. Any minute I knew I was done for, they would get me, but still, every second longer I survived, a small gleam of hope seemed to shine, telling me that I was going to live.   
 But that spark was quickly shattered. Turning one of the corners, I realized I was trapped. About fifty yards ahead a large brick wall greeted me, its barbed wire shining in the The Night
